Kirknowe Resident Celebrates 100th BirthdayGeorgie McFetrich celebrated her 100th birthday this month surrounded by her loving family.

Georgie has a wonderful family who she loves dearly, including five grandsons, two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, four great-grandsons and four great-great-grandsons.

She celebrated the milestone with Champagne Afternoon Tea followed by a party the next day. Lord Provost Jean Jones and Lord Lieutenant Susan Haughey surprised Georgie with a visit and presented her with her telegram from the Queen.

Georgie was born on 6th February 1918 in East William Street in Greenock. She enjoyed a 32-year marriage with her husband James and together they had two daughters.

From 1974 Georgie threw herself into voluntary work where she worked at a lunch club subsidised by the local church for the next 20 years.

A quote from the church newsletter in 1976 read:
“We pensioners have never had it so good, a 4 course meal for 15p including tea and biscuits. You should see our wee Georgie rushing around with her outsized plate of biscuits; she should get a big tea biscuit medal!”

In 2002 Georgie moved to Wishaw to be closer to her daughter Irene and her family before moving into Kirknowe Care Home in 2015. She has been really happy there and commented “this is my home away from home”.

Georgie commented:
“It’s been a day that I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”

Hazel Johnston, Unit Manager at Kirknowe, commented:
“We have been looking forward to this day for months now and it’s finally here! It’s been a fabulous day for Georgina and all the Residents have loved the celebrations.”
