‘Lorraine is more than a visitor – she’s family’: Wife’s love shines bright at Tipton care home

In the heart of HC-One’s Waterside Care Home, in Tipton, West Midlands, resident Lorraine Elizabeth Roberts has woven herself into the fabric of daily life, transforming her role as a devoted wife into a cornerstone of compassion for an entire community.

Born and raised in West Bromwich, Lorraine’s journey has taken her from secretarial desks to foreign shores in Germany and Cyprus, and back to a 30-year career in computer software – yet nothing compares to the impact she is making today at HC-One’s Waterside Care Home.

71-year-old Lorraine’s story is inseparable from her husband, Terry, 76, a West Bromwich native and lifelong football enthusiast who once graced the pitch for West Bromwich Albion’s third team and refereed matches for 25-years.

The couple’s paths first crossed as childhood neighbours, only to diverge and reunite in 2002 through a mutual friend. Their love blossomed, culminating in a 2013 wedding and a shared devotion to their beloved Albion as season ticket holders.

However, life threw challenges their way as Terry’s Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis in 2007 was followed by Parkinson’s Dementia just before the COVID-19 lockdown, a period that tested Lorraine’s strength as his primary caregiver. On March 1, 2023, Terry moved into HC-One’s Waterside Care Home – a transition that Lorraine admitted was daunting.

Lorraine Roberts, relative of a resident at HC-One’s Waterside Care Home, said:

“It was hard at first, we’d never experienced care homes before but now, seeing Terry safe, happy, and settled, I feel comforted.”

Terry’s cheeky humour and football passion have found a home at Waterside, where colleagues embrace his passions. Lorraine, who visits six days a week from West Bromwich to Waterside on public transport, remains his anchor – yet her influence extends far beyond.

She has become a familiar, caring presence for all residents, greeting each with warmth, checking on their well-being, and even assisting with daily tasks. From collecting menu choices to gathering dignity aprons for laundry, Lorraine’s hands are never idle.

She joins the wellbeing team for bingo and “Play Your Cards Right”, and in sunnier months, she is outside reminiscing with residents in the garden.

Fabiana Pereira, HC-One’s Waterside Care Home Manager, stated:

“Lorraine is more than a visitor – she’s family. Her dedication to Terry and our community exemplifies the power of kindness. She brings comfort, builds bonds, and enhances lives daily.

“Seeing Terry thrive, surrounded by support for his personality and passions, reassures Lorraine – and us – that Waterside is a place of trust and belonging. We’re grateful for her reminder of what warmth and companionship mean.”
