A resident at Coopers Croft Care Home in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, and his wife have celebrated 70-years of happy marriage together.
Leonard and Sheila Ralph both grew up in Cannock, Staffordshire. Sheila moved in with her sister when she was 18-years-old, and Leonard lived a door away from her.
Their love story began through their shared passion for dancing, with Leonard always ensuring Sheila got home safely. The pair both enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, and this is where their romance blossomed.
Leonard proposed to Sheila on her 21st birthday on May 7, 1954, and they couple tied the knot the following year at St Luke's Church Cannock on March 19, 1955. Together, they have four children – named Tony, David, Catherine and Susan – and they are proud grandparents to six grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After renting their first home on Stafford Road in Cannock, Leonard and Sheila later purchased their own house on the outskirts of the town. Leonard worked as a surveyor for the National Coal Board, while Sheila spent many years in retail, with her final job being at a local paper shop, a role she thoroughly enjoyed.
When asked what their secret is to 70-years of happy marriage, Sheila Ralph said:
“Our secret to a long and happy marriage is about having similar interests. We both had a passion of dancing and being best friends.”
Anita Rawlingson, Coopers Croft Activities Coordinator, stated:
“Celebrating Leonard and Sheila Ralph's remarkable 70 years together is a true testament to their deep love and enduring commitment. Their story is an inspiration to all of us at Coopers Croft and serves as a reminder that lasting love is built on kindness and companionship.”
