Residents have a terror-ific time carving pumpkinsResidents at HC-One’s Roseberry Court Care Home in Redcar enjoyed an afternoon helping the children from Lakes Primary School carve their pumpkins and were amazed at them using pumpkins instead of turnips.

As they worked, the Resident’s told the children all about their Halloween childhood memories commenting:

“We used to carve out turnips from the farmer’s field and eat some of the carvings as we went along until we got sick!

When we were children, our parents let us use sharp knives; I don’t know what they were thinking! It took us forever to carve them out and we used string for the handle. Can you believe it; we had real candles inside the turnips to make the light.”

The children were amazed at the Resident’s tales and they all loved swapping Halloween stories.

After pumpkin carving, everyone melted some chocolate and made rice crispy cakes, decorated them and enjoyed eating them over refreshments.

Resident Elsie Beck commented:

“I love chatting to the younger generation; you get such pleasure finding out what they are doing in their lives.”

Resident Eileen Walker commented:

“Pumpkins, what’s wrong with turnips?!”

Alison Corner, Home Manager at Roseberry Court, commented:

“Residents look forward to the children’s visits every week, their faces light up when the children arrive and are full of joy and excitement.”
