Resident speaks her first word in years to her great granddaughterRoseberry Court’s Resident Betty Johnson had a special visit from her family all the way from Australia this week, encouraging her to speak her first word in years to her one-year-old great granddaughter, Mila.

Betty finds it increasingly difficult to communicate, normally replying with gestures and facial expressions. However, when Mila came into the room Betty reached her arms out to her great granddaughter and very clearly said “come”.

Her daughter Helen, her granddaughter Adele and great granddaughter flew over from Brisbane, Australia resulting in an unusual occurrence: four generations of women in the family in one room.

They all enjoyed a laughter-filled afternoon together with lots of cuddles and kisses from Mila, who reached her own milestone as she walked for the very first time, a cake and refreshments.

Alison Corner, Roseberry Court’s Home Manager, commented:

“Betty has been with us since 2012 on our memory care floor. She finds it increasingly difficult to verbally communicate, often replying to questions with gestures and facial expressions.

Betty’s daughter lives in Australia and visits as often as she can. This visit included Betty’s granddaughter and great-granddaughter Mila equalling four generations of girls.

We are extremely happy that Mila took her first steps with us here at Roseberry Court.”
