John James Fisher, a Resident at
HC-One’s Rose Court Care Home in Radcliffe, Manchester, celebrated his 100th birthday with his family, friends and fellow Residents.
Born on 20th September 1923 in Manchester, John worked as a fireman on the steam trains during the second World War ferrying the troops around the UK. He later joined the Post Office as a Postman and worked at Prestwich Post Office until he retired in 1988.
As a hobby, John used to enjoy making toys with wood for his grandchildren and had a shed specially made for all his tools to work with. Family is very important to John, and he recalls how they used to go out to the pub for Sunday drinks together, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
John was introduced to Gertrude, his wife of 51 years by his sister and they were married on 25th May 1954. The couple have two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth and a son, Peter, as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
To mark the milestone birthday, Rose Court threw a big party for John with an entertainer, lots of food and drinks and finishing off with a birthday card from King Charles III.
Fellow residents were invited, and a lot of fun was had by all. John's daughter, son, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and granddaughter were all in attendance for the special day.
When asked about what his secret is to a long life, John remarked:
“Remain physically active and (have) a happy life.”
Leanne Batten-Smith, Home Manager at Rose Court care home, commented:
“This was an amazing day of joy and a lifelong achievement, which brought ‘happy tears’ to all. Such an amazing event/ milestone that we all got to share with John and his family.”
