Remembrance Sunday held for Devizes ResidentsRemembrance Sunday is a day held in high regard and importance by the majority of Residents at Market Lavington care home.

This year, everyone enjoyed gathering, socially distanced, in the lounges to watch the memorial services on television.

Wellbeing Coordinator, Riaz Ali, did a little investigation for the day, “I discovered that the famous verse that begins ‘They shall not grow old…” is actually just one verse from a much longer poem called ‘For The Fallen’ by Robert Lawrence Binyon, that was originally published in the Times newspaper on 21st September 1914.”

“Not many of the Residents were aware of this and a little surprised by the fact, so I printed off copies of the whole poem and passed them to Residents who were very interested and touched when they read that verse in the context of the other verses.”

Residents, including Kathleen Duggan (pictured), shared some comments from the day, and reading the poem, with Colleagues, they enjoyed being able to share their memories of the war with others:

“It’s important to remember all the dead.”

“They were so brave, so many young men going to war.”

“What a sad poem.”

Riaz remarked, “It was lovely to be able to read out the full poem to our Residents who are visually impaired and unable to read themselves. They found the poem beautiful.”
