HC-One’s Meadow Bank Care Home in Preston, Lancashire, is celebrating the annual event of Nutrition and Hydration week from the 11th to 17th March 2024 with a variety of activities. The week aims to highlight and promote the provision of nutrition and hydration as key components in staying healthy.
Colleagues at Meadow Bank hosted a ‘Fantastic Fruit Fair’ for residents, providing them with the opportunity to try tasting a variety of different delicious fruits. Allison Gallacher, Lecturer in Sport and Enhanced Personal Tutor at the University of Bolton, brought in lots of different fruits and vegetables in for residents to try lots of different tastes and textures whilst also learning about the nutritional benefits and information about the fruit and vegetables they were eating. Colleagues also dressed up especially for the occasion in fruit fancy dress costumes and residents donned fruit themed glasses.
Dawn Ward, Wellbeing Coordinator at Meadow Bank Care Home, said:
“Residents really enjoyed tasting all the different fresh and dried fruits. The day allowed residents to try foods that tickled their tastebuds, and also sample delicacies that they’d never tried before. Residents really enjoyed learning about all the nutritional benefits that the different fruit and vegetables provide to them.”
Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of well-being, and for the elderly, it becomes even more vital. Adequate intake of essential nutrients not only sustains physical health but also plays a pivotal role in supporting cognitive function and immune system strength.
Chris Bonner, Executive Chef and Nutrition & Hydration Lead at HC-One, said:
“Every day at HC-One we focus on the importance of nutrition and hydration of our residents. The week is important for us at HC-One as it brings people together, as well as highlights and educates people on the value of food and drink in maintaining health and wellbeing in the health and social care sector.”
