Person-centred activities at Market Lavington bring fun to allSupporting Residents’ hobbies and interests, as well as creating a lot of fun for everyday life, is something Colleagues always ensure at Market Lavington care home, in Devizes. And this week they went that extra mile again when it comes to person-centred care, with a Trivial Pursuit afternoon and doing some art this week.

The Residents at Market Lavington joined the wellbeing team for an afternoon of Trivial Pursuit, although some had never played it before, they soon got into the swing of it and all had a lot of fun answering the questions, moving their pieces and collecting the pie wedges.

Everyone joined in on answering the questions, and all the Residents (and Colleagues involved) had a wonderful afternoon, talking about each question, enjoying company of others and of course enjoying a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake too!

Residents at the 80-bed residential, nursing and dementia care home, always enjoy the social aspect of the activities that are provided at the home, especially when they can express their personalities and have a laugh.

Angela Wakeley, who lives at Market Lavington, said, “Some of these questions must have been made up on the spot!”

Michaela Powell, Wellbeing Coordinator, commented, “I haven’t played Trivial Pursuit in a long time, it was nice to see the Residents so happy and getting into the activity.

Following on, even more activities have been happening this week, including a new attendee to the home’s art group.

Lesley Shaw is one of the home’s newer Residents. Born in 1939 in Winchester, Lesley discovered at a very early age she was interested in art and took it at A level when she was in grammar school.

Lesley explained, “I have tried all different mediums, oils, watercolours, but these days I tend to go for acrylics. I quite like figures and still life.”

On occasion, Lesley has had her artwork displayed at local exhibitions, which she says is very flattering!

In the late 1950s Lesley attended Southampton University to study and train to become a teacher. She ended up becoming the Headmistress of two schools in Salisbury in the 1980s. Upon retiring as a teacher, then successfully studied for an Art degree with the Open University.

The wellbeing team always love supporting Residents with any hobby or interest they might have and find it rewarding to see Residents being able to continue pursuing the things that they enjoy in life! The home hosts regular arts and crafts activities and Lesley said that she will be joining soon for her first art group!

Lesley said, “I am 83 and have loved art for at least 73 years of my life and will continue to do so!”

Riaz Ali, Wellbeing Coordinator, remarked, “It is so lovely to see Lesley able to pursue her interests and she is enthusiastic about attending her first arts and crafts activity at the home!”
