Old meets young at Ramsey care homeYoung carers from the local area have been making friends with Residents at HC-One’s The Red House care home in Ramsey as part of an intergenerational project.

Over the past 18 months, both young and old have been experiencing activities together including cooking, crafts, reminiscence sessions and board games.

The young carers created a piece of art which included lyrics from ‘My Old Mans A Dustman’, a song a Resident would sing during the group sessions.

The project helps to encourage the development of relationships between generations and aids cognitive simulation. It also connected people throughout the rural community, encouraging them to celebrate festivities and special events together.

During the sessions, everyone has shared interests, experiences and ambitions as well as learning new skills.

Recently the project came to an end, during the last session the young carers and Residents enjoyed a party together, with live entertainment and a buffet lunch.

The project proved to be so successful in creating bonds between young and old that some of the young carers have opted for their work experience to be at The Red House.

Pam Peach, a Resident at The Red House said:

“I enjoyed making wind chimes and cakes with the group. It was lovely to meet them all.”

The Red House, Home Manager Keith Ware said:

“It’s been a great experience having the young carers group at The Red House, the interaction and activities are great for mental and physical wellbeing.

"Watching the relationships form between Residents and the group is amazing. Everyone at The Red House looks forward to welcoming members of the group back for regular visits."
