Milestone celebrations for Resident at Penrith Care HomeResident, Bertha Bottomley, celebrates her 100th birthday surrounded by friends and family at HC-One’s Cold Springs Park Care Home in Penrith, Cumbria.

The day brought love and reminiscence from all of her family, including her seven grandchildren, Claire, Craig and Callum Bottomley, Jenny and Steven Maude, Dan and Jack Vickers who all enjoyed their own individual time with Bertha, spoiling her rotten with cards and gifts.

They also presented her with a beautiful handmade birthday cake and Bertha was overjoyed to receive her card from the Queen.

Also joining in the party was the other Residents at Cold Springs who couldn’t wait to celebrate with her and wish her many happy returns on her special day.

Bertha, who was born east of Morton at the edge of Ikey Moor and loved walking and cycling.

She enjoyed a variety of employment through her years, from the Cotton Mills of Yorkshire, running a bed and breakfast in Tebay Village and at a Post Office, which she says where the best years of her life.

During World War II, Bertha worked in a munitions factory, which specialised in filling various munitions, such as bombs, shells, cartridges, pyrotechnics, screening smokes etc. 

Roy Bottomley, Bertha’s son, commented:

“We had such a good day, it was so nice for us to all be together to celebrate mum’s birthday and was amazing to see her surrounded by her loved ones.”
