Loyal visitor is awarded The British Empire MedalGertie Ayer, a regular visitor to Stoneleigh, has been awarded The British Empire Medal for her loyalty and devotion to the Residents.

Gertie has visited the Residents at Stoneleigh every day, except Sunday, and has been doing so for over 20 years.

Stoneleigh’s Home Manager, Kay Rudd, nominated Gertie for an award, as she wanted to recognise her loyalty and devotion to the Residents, resulting in her receiving the honourable British Empire Medal.

The Crown awards the British Empire Medal to those who have shown exemplary civil or military service, worthy of recognition. The award was presented by Susan Snowdon, Lord Lieutenant of Durham and was accompanied by her deputy, Kingsley Smith.

The ceremony took place in the local chapel where over 100 people attended, including members of staff and some of the Residents at Stoneleigh.

Gertie’s son Tom accompanied her to the ceremony. He takes her over to Stoneleigh every day, unless she is unwell or if the weather is too bad.

Gertie then went to Stoneleigh for a celebratory photo shoot and enjoyed a buffet with the Residents, where she was also presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Kay Rudd, Stoneleigh’s Home Manager, commented:

“I’m so pleased that we could nominate Gertie, it’s the least we could do after everything she has done for us. The Residents were so proud to be a part of this momentous occasion.”
