Sweet toothed residents at HC-One’s Brandon House in Coventry dug out their pinnies and mixing bowls and went head to head with local homes for a Macmillan Coffee Morning Bake Off on Friday 29th September.
Cedar Court in Wigston and Victoria Manor and Victoria Park, both in Coventry joined residents and staff at Brandon House for the big bake off, raising valuable money for national charity MacMillan.
An esteemed line up of judges, including Police Community Support Officers from the local area, tasted the test entries from three HC-One homes based in Leicester and Coventry.
The winners at Victoria Manor were commended for their bright and colourful cakes, with a light and fluffy sponge!
Sheryl Davis, care home manager, at HC-One, commented: “The bake off was a fantastic opportunity for residents from different HC-One homes to come together and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
“We encourage residents at all of our homes to regularly meet up and participate in activities together and we’re happy to say that so far our initiative to tackle social isolation has been a great success, with many new friendships being forged.”
HC-One runs many events throughout the course of the year to encourage its residents to engage with each other and visit other homes. A special friendship has been developed between two Polish residents as a result of the homes getting together, with the couple spending much of their visit speaking in Polish during meet-ups.
The bake sale was open to the community and all money raised will help to fund the fight against cancer, which affects 2.5 million people in the UK.
HC-One’s mission to reduce loneliness amongst the elderly follows a study by The Co-op and the British Red Cross, which found that over 9 million people in the UK are either always or often lonely.
