Hayes care home celebrates Black History MonthHC-One's Aston House Care Home, in Hayes, has been celebrating Black History Month during the month of October.

Residents at HC-One’s Aston House Care Home, which provides residential dementia and nursing dementia care, enjoyed a range of activities that reflected and highlighted black culture and creativity.

The home was decorated with posters and other decor focussing on key figures in black culture and their contributions to wider society. Residents were encouraged to sample a wide range of Caribbean and African dishes that reflected the breadth and depth of foods with a black cultural heritage.

These included mahambri, a Swahili fried bread from Kenya, sadza ne nyama, a beef dish from southern Africa, jerk chicken, the delicious Jamaican spicy chicken dish, and a chicken curry as well.

Marjorie Howard, resident at Aston House Care Home, said:

"The chicken curry tasted great! I love it when there's a different spread on the table."

Andrea Vaz, Wellbeing Coordinator at Aston House Care Home, said:

“We had a wonderful time celebrating Black History Month at Aston House. We prepared by putting up some posters with inspirational quotes by strong black activists, and staff members and residents had a few conversations between themselves about why we celebrate Black History month.

“On our designated ‘Black History Day’, our staff members brought in homemade traditional dishes that everyone really enjoyed. Afterwards, we all had a dance to afrobeat and Ethiopian cultural music. It was a brilliant occasion.”
