Greater Manchester care home’s Resident Centenarian celebrates 100th birthdayThis April marked a very special celebration at the Beeches care home, which offers residential care in Dukinfield, as many Residents and colleagues got together to celebrate Nellie Platt’s 100th birthday.

The morning was spent with family, and Nellie opening cards and presents. One of the highlights was when she opened her card from the Queen, much to everyone’s delight (see pictured right).

Throughout the morning, Nellie’s grandchildren came from all over the country to visit her and some of her old church friends came to the home with gifts.

Nellies family used a memory book, that she had written from being young until her adult years, and they took segments and matched them up with pictures and made some lovely story boards for staff to display (see pictured left). Residents and staff found these very interesting and even found out some interesting pieces of information that they didn’t know about Nellie.

Nellie was born on 28th April 1922 in Ashton-Under-Lyne, less than a ten-minute drive away from where she lives now at The Beeches. She worked as a secretary and enjoyed travelling, playing golf, family history and being a member of the local church.

She married in 1958 to her husband Fred and they had three daughters, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In the afternoon of her birthday, Nellie enjoyed a joint party with fellow Resident Annie who turned 90 earlier in the week. Accompanied with well-loved entertainment from singer Samantha Jones. Everyone was up dancing and singing and it truly was an afternoon of fun and special to both ladies.

When asked about what the secret is to a long life, Nellie replied with, “Keeping active in my later life and learning new things.”

Sade Smith, Wellbeing Coordinator, commented, “It’s been an honour to organise such a special day. Reaching 100 is amazing and to see Nellie with family who she’s not seen during the pandemic to celebrate her birthday was lovely.”

“To celebrate with our first party of the year, two very special birthdays. It’s been a pleasure to organise for both ladies.”
