Ethel shares her secret to a long life at 100th birthday partyEthel Donkin, who is a Resident at HC-One’s Ashton Grange care home, in Pallion, Sunderland, celebrated her 100th birthday in style with a party fit for a queen and sixty Relatives attending.

Mary Ethel Donkin was born on 30th June 1923 in Horden, Sunderland and says her mother influenced her life. She worked at Pyrex and as a dinner lady at the local children’s school. She then worked at Fulwell Centre with disabled children and said she loved the job. She often talks to Colleagues at the home of fond memories of the time she spent there.  She said it was the best job she ever had. Her and husband Matthew have one daughter Linda, two sons Alan and William, and six grandchildren.

She enjoys dancing, knitting and family holidays, having often spent time in Scarborough and Blackpool.  Ethel also had a caravan at Stanhope which she loved and had for years.

For her birthday celebrations, Colleagues decorated the care home and even got Ethel her own crown to wear throughout the occasion. There was a delicious, personalised cake for Ethel, buffet, prosecco, lots of balloons, flowers and cards.

Having always loved the Royal Family, Ethel was overjoyed to receive her 100th birthday card from King Charles III, which was only fitting that the ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ himself, Elvis, paid her a visit and sang and entertained to all of Ethel’s guests at her party.

There were approximately 60 family members who attended the home and were overwhelmed with the effort Colleagues at the home had made.

Ethel had an amazing day and one to be remembered by both family members and Residents.

When asked about what her secret is to a long life, Ethel said,

“To be kind to everyone and then the kindness is returned.”
“I’ve had a great day. It (the home) looks so pretty, and the singer was great.”

Lesley Dawson, Care Home Manager at Ashton Grange, said:
“Ethel’s birthday celebrations were an amazing success! Organising memorable events like this is an important part of how HC-One provides the kindest care.”
