Celebrations have been in full swing at HC-One’s Godden Lodge Care Home, in Benfleet, Essex, as one of its residents reached her centenary milestone in style.
Doris Lord, better known as ‘Dolly’, a much-loved resident at HC-One’s Godden Lodge Care Home, was joined by family, friends, fellow residents and staff as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, November 25.
In attendance were over 40 friends and family members, including one of Doris’ best friends who she served with in the army, Elsie Harris. Doris received over 100 cards from well-wishers across the country, including a telegram from King Charles and Queen Camilla in recognition of her milestone birthday.
Doris also spent some quality time ahead of her birthday on Friday, November 22, with Member of Parliament (MP) for Caste Point, Dame Rebecca Harris. Rebecca even brought her a birthday balloon, a bouquet of flowers and card to commemorate Doris’ birthday celebrations.
Doris, who wore a special tiara, also received a visit from the children at Runnymede Pre School who presented Doris with handmade birthday cards and even sang happy birthday to her. Doris has lived a remarkable life filled with love, resilience and cherished memories.
She was born in Tilbury, Essex on November 25 in 1924. Doris was one of five children, being the oldest born child alongside three brothers and one sister.
She joined the Armed Forces in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (A.T.S) where she met her husband, George Lord, who she married in 1945. The couple were married for over 50 years, and they moved to Leicestershire to build a life together after the Second World War ended.
Last year, Doris relocated to Essex to move closer to her family. Doris enjoys the simple pleasures in life, including a good cup of tea, indulging in biscuits, boiled sweets and chocolates.
When asked about any special memories she has from over the past century, Doris Lord, commented:
“I’ve lived a long and fulfilling life filled with lots of memories, happiness and joy including meeting my husband, George and best friend, Elsie during my time in the Armed Forces. I’m grateful to everyone who has took the time to pass on their birthday well wishes through sending me a birthday card, thank you!”
