A local lady believed to be East Grinstead’s oldest resident has been celebrating her 103rd birthday.
Phyllis Stamp, who lives at HC-One’s Charters Court care home in the Charters Retirement Village, was born on the 19th January 1921 in Balham, London.
She remained in London for much of her life, living in Tooting where she enjoyed a busy family life while also finding time to work as a typist in a solicitor’s office.
In her spare time Phyllis loves to read romantic novels, and she has a delivery of books once a month from East Grinstead Library.
Speaking before her birthday party, Phyllis was asked her secret to long life, and she replied:
“Keeping busy and staying cheerful”.
To celebrate, Phyllis enjoyed a small party with her daughter Jane and her partner Robin, alongside other family members. She received a delicious birthday cake and accompanied her slice of cake with a large glass of red wine, one of her favourite drinks.
Mel Wightman, Senior Home Manager at Charters Court care home, said:
“What a wonderful occasion to celebrate with Phyllis and her family. We’ve all had a lovely day.”
