On Thursday 18th July, a resident at
HC-One’s The Beeches care home, in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester, achieved his wish of going to the local swimming pool.
Kevin Powers, 78, who has been living at the Beeches since October 2023, recently went on a trip out to watch his grandson Ted, aged 10, swim at the local Swimming Gala. Kevin came back to The Beeches telling everyone about it and said he would love to go swimming again, having used to be very good at it.
Val, who is the Home Administrator at the residential care home, rang Denton Wellness Centre and went to look round to organise Kevin’s wish.
Home Administrator, Val Ellams, commented:
“Kevin was so happy when we told him we could take him, he asked his daughter to get him some swimming trunks for his birthday!”
On Thursday 18th July, Val and Care Assistant, Joanne Burnett, accompanied Kevin swimming. He had such a great time and enjoyed being able to try to swim again after 20 years of not being in a swimming pool!
When talking to Sade Smith, Wellbeing Coordinator, Kevin Powers, said:
“I used to swim every night after work on my own, I didn't have a shower at home just a bath so I would go for a swim, use the shower and then go for my tea.
I went to the local baths which was Ashton.
I really enjoyed going swimming again, it was after I went watching Ted in the swimming Gala and then we got talking about it with you (Sade).
I enjoyed it I just wish I was fit like I used to be!”
