Leslie and Sadie Southall celebrated 59 years of marriage at HC-One’s Hebburn Court care home in Hebburn on Wednesday 17th March.
The couple met at local dance hall in 1960, they fell in love and married two years later on the same date they first met at St Mathews Church in Jarrow. Sadie was a seamstress and Leslie worked as an electrician, they were blessed with two children and five grandchildren.
When asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage is, Sadie said: “Compromise is key, along with mutual respect and making time for one another.”
To celebrate their anniversary the team at Hebburn Court arranged a high tea, with their favourite sandwiches and cakes served with a glass of the couple’s favourite bottle of wine. The music from their first dance played in the background and the room was beautifully decorated with balloons.
Hebburn Court Home Manager, Dale Summersby said: “I am delighted that Mr and Mrs Southall were able to celebrate their anniversary together, after a difficult year for everyone it’s moments like this that remind us what’s important in life.”
