A heartfelt mission is underway at HC-One’s Newfield Lodge Care Home, in Castleford, West Yorkshire, to honour the veteran community as the care home strives to become part of the Veteran Friendly Service.
Home to four veterans and four spouses of veterans, HC-One’s Newfield Lodge is a place where the legacy of service runs deep. Many residents have loved ones, friends, and family who have proudly served, making Remembrance Day and military celebrations a cornerstone of life at Newfield Lodge.
Veterans that reside at Newfield Lodge residents are Philip Tucker, Frank Aktinson, Derek Harness and Colin Brodi. Veterans’ spouses that live at Newfield Lodge include Jean Haigh, Molly Head, Rita Flower, and Iris Horsefield.
In a spirited effort to pay tribute, the Newfield Lodge team has launched a fundraising campaign to transform a corner of the garden into a memorial space. This will become a serene spot where residents, friends, and family can reflect on the sacrifices of those who served and continue to serve.
Lauren Poole, Newfield Lodge Wellbeing Coordinator, led the charge by organising a lively car wash fundraiser. Friends, families, and the local community were invited to roll up their sleeves and get their cars sparkling clean for just £5.
The event was a resounding success, raising £107 toward the garden memorial, which residents can visit whenever they wish. The day buzzed with energy as Stevie Woodhouse’s daughter Steph O’Donnell joined in, washing cars and sharing in the community spirit.
Newfield Lodge’s efforts are more than a fundraiser – they are a tribute to resilience, service, and unity. With every sudsy sponge and shining car, the care home is building a lasting legacy for its veterans and their families, one wash at a time.
Derek Harness, HC-One’s Newfield Lodge resident, said:
“It will be nice to have something in the garden to represent all the army community.”
Lauren Poole, HC-One’s Newfield Lodge Wellbeing Coordinator, stated:
“It is amazing to see the staff team working together to create something that will be in our garden for many years.”
