Residents at a local care home have enjoyed a day trip to Market Lavington Museum to brush up on their knowledge of local history.
Staff at HC-One’s Market Lavington care home arranged the trip in response to a request by residents who wanted to learn more about the history of the area.
And the visit to Market Lavington Museum provided the perfect opportunity to delve deeply into the story of the past.
The residents, some of whom have been living in the area all their lives, enjoyed looking at the old tools and instruments they used for farming, and seeing the collection of old photos of early 1900 Market Lavington.
They discussed how much the village has changed over their lifetimes but also how it was possible to still see the glimpses of the old village in some areas.
The residents also enjoyed looking round the museum’s historical kitchen area, with vintage cookware, laundry utensils and old hoovers. The residents picked out items that they recognised and had even used themselves or seen their parents using when they were growing up.
Resident Janice Reed said:
“It’s so lovely in the museum, so much to see and learn about.
We particularly liked the way it helped us get in touch with some of our own memories from growing up in this area many years ago.”
Another resident, Grace Pearce, said:
“I remembered using the laundry tongs for my laundry in my house, it was such hard work!”
Jasmine Simmonds, manager at Market Lavington Care Home, said:
“We are always keen to promote the links between our residents and the local community and support our residents if they have any special requests of places they would like to visit.
Everyone had a great time visiting the museum and we hope to do it again.”
