Birmingham care home celebrates World Egg DayHC-One's Hodge Hill Grange care home, in Hodge Hill, Birmingham, has celebrated World Egg Day with a special session celebrating all things ‘egg’.

World Egg Day is an exciting opportunity to raise global awareness about the incredible benefits of eggs as an inexpensive and highly nutritious food source. There are numerous ways to participate in World Egg Day 2024 celebrations, which are taking place on Friday, October 11.

From creating a captivating egg sculpture using food to using eggs in a variety of ways, the possibilities are endless. Residents at HC-One’s Hodge Hill Grange care home were treated to a range of delicious egg dishes, freshly prepared by HC-One’s Group Development chef Pete Coles.

Pete encouraged residents to get involved in the making of the various foods. The selection of egg delicacies included homemade scotch eggs, mayonnaise, egg sandwiches, meringue kisses, and devilled eggs. As well as preparing the various dishes, Pete also talked about the biology and science of eggs.

After the dishes were completed, everyone enthusiastically joined in sampling the different options. Residents and staff spent time discussing the value of eggs in our diet and talked about their likes and dislikes when it came to how they enjoy their eggs ‘in the morning’. They also discussed using eggs in baking, and their favourite traditional cake recipes.

Pete Coles, Group Development Chef at HC-One, who delivered the session, said:
“It was lovely to meet the Hodge Hill Grange team and residents for their ‘World Egg Day’ event. It was particularly wonderful to receive plenty of interaction from the residents who attended.

"Those who came along had very encouraging comments to make, and those that I spoke to after all stated that they would love to do another event again in the future because of how nice it was! Highlights included watching Bert whisking away making homemade mayonnaise, and who can forget (as she introduced herself to me) ‘Sexy’ Sue who really got stuck in making the picnic and scotch eggs in the morning session.

"It appeared the majority seemed to enjoy experiencing the different twists on show when it came to ‘egg-sperimenting’ with different egg creations, and I had a wonderful time chatting away with residents about their likes and dislikes when it came to how they enjoy their eggs ‘in the morning!’

"Getting to chat with those that turned out and create everlasting memories for them was an absolute joy to be involved with and it was wonderful to see many smiling faces.”
