Edith Higgs celebrated her 100th birthday at HC-One’s Croft Avenue care home in Penrith on Saturday 17th April.
Born on the Isle of Dogs in 1921, Edith was one of three children and worked as a canteen manager at BBC Skelton before becoming the cooking supervisor at St Catherine’s School in Penrith.
Edith moved to Penrith in 1960 with her husband, Charlie who was a Dunkirk veteran. They had two children, Diane and Stuart and were blessed with two great grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Edith and Charlie celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary last year, shortly before Charlie sadly passed away aged 101.
To celebrate her milestone birthday, Edith was surprised with a horse and carriage ride, the horses Dexter and Drambuie belong to Jackie Parkinson, a member of the kitchen team at Croft Avenue and her husband Dougie. Edith was also visited by two dear friends and some of her old neighbours came to give their best wishes from a distance.
Edith also enjoyed a video call with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren before a party with her fellow Residents at Croft Avenue care home.
Croft Avenue Home Manager, Teresa McGuiness said: “We were honoured to help Edith celebrate her special birthday, I am so pleased she enjoyed the festivities.”
Situated off Wordsworth Street, Croft Avenue care home offers short and long term care packages for older ladies and gentlemen that require residential care.
