HC Ones Executive Chef and Nutrition Hydration Lead shortlisted as finalist for Care Home Caterin

HC-One’s Executive Chef and Nutrition & Hydration Lead, Chris Bonner, has been named a finalist in the ‘Above & Beyond Special Award’ category at the Care Home Catering Awards 2025.

The Care Home Catering Awards celebrate the dedication, innovation, and quality of catering teams across the UK, recognising the unsung heroes who go above and beyond to enhance mealtime experiences in care homes.

Chris has been shortlisted for his exceptional dedication to improving the nutritional wellbeing of elderly and vulnerable individuals in a residential care setting.

A passion for nutrition and hydration

Chris’s passion for food and nutrition started at a young age, leading to a career spanning over 25 years. From working in a pub kitchen in his hometown to spending 15 years as a Chef in the Army, his journey has been shaped by a love of food and service.

In 2012, he transitioned to the care sector, wanting to give back to the generations who paved the way for today’s world. After five years at Helen McArdle Care, Chris joined HC-One in 2017 as the company’s first-ever Development Chef. He has since progressed to his current role as Executive Chef and Nutrition & Hydration Lead.

Transforming dining experiences for residents

Chris loves experimenting with food and creating new dishes, working closely with colleagues across HC-One’s care homes to enhance all aspects of food and culinary services for residents. His passion lies not only in delivering high-quality, nutritious meals but also in bringing joy and smiles to residents through great food.

Chris has gone above and beyond in his role, ensuring residents receive nutritious, high-quality meals that cater to their dietary needs while upholding dignity and choice. His initiatives have fostered a culture of respect, engagement, and continuous improvement within HC-One.

Some of his key achievements include:

          ●  Spearheading two major menu overhauls in 2024, ensuring meals are tailored to residents' preferences and nutritional requirements.
          ●  Securing a strategic partnership with Nestlé, introducing new product options and cost savings that benefit residents and HC-One’s operational performance.
          ●  Leading the rollout of IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) training, reaching over 9,700 colleagues and improving safety for residents with swallowing difficulties.
          ●  Ensuring comprehensive food safety and hygiene training, maintaining high standards in catering and housekeeping services.

Chris was nominated by Mark Meacham, Head of Catering and Housekeeping Support Services at HC-One, who said:

“Chris exemplifies the essence of the Above & Beyond Special Award. His outstanding leadership, commitment to innovation, and passion for enhancing the nutritional wellbeing of HC-One residents have left a lasting, positive impact.

“Through his collaborative efforts, he has not only improved the quality of care but has also inspired a culture of excellence within HC-One. His tireless dedication truly sets him apart, making Chris more than deserving of this prestigious recognition.”

On hearing the news of his shortlisting, Chris Bonner said:

“I am extremely happy and grateful for this amazing recognition! It’s a huge honour to be shortlisted as a finalist at the Care Home Catering Awards 2025 in the ‘Above & Beyond Special Award’ category.”

The Care Home Catering Forum and Awards will take place on Thursday, 5 June 2025, at Farmers and Fletchers, Barbican, London, where the winners will be announced.
