At HC-One, we recognise the benefits of gardening for many people living in our care homes.
We believe in promoting activities that improve both physical and mental health, which is why our Gardens in Bloom competition is such a cherished event. This initiative encourages our care homes across England, Scotland and Wales to embrace the outdoors, while reaping the many health benefits that gardening offers.
Physical health benefits of gardening
Gardening is more than just a pastime — it can act as a gentle full-body workout. It combines aerobic exercise with strength training, as gardeners stretch, bend, and lift, using muscles in ways that can relieve tension and keep joints healthy. It’s an ideal way to stay active without the need for a gym!
For older adults, gardening can help improve balance and dexterity, reducing the risk of falls, which becomes even more important as we age. Research shows that just 30 minutes of gardening can burn more calories than 30 minutes of yoga!
Mental health benefits of gardening
Physical activity is also known to boost mental health, and gardening is no exception. The combination of movement, fresh air, and sensory experiences like the sounds of nature and smells of flowers can improve mood and help manage stress. Studies have found that physical activity can reduce the risk of some mental health conditions by up to 30%.
Nutritional benefits of gardening
Gardening often goes hand-in-hand with growing fruits and vegetables, which naturally promotes a healthier diet. Studies suggest that people who garden tend to eat more fruits and vegetables.
