The power of friendships in care home communitiesFriendship is one of life’s greatest joys, offering companionship and a sense of belonging at any age. In care home communities, friendships play a vital role in enhancing the well-being of people living in our homes - bringing comfort, laughter, and meaningful connections that make every day brighter.

Across HC-One’s family of care homes, we celebrate the power of friendship and the positive impact it has on our residents' lives, not just this International Friendship Month, but all year round.

Connection and companionship in our care homes

Moving into a care home marks a new chapter, and for many, it’s an opportunity to form new friendships that enrich daily life. Whether through shared experiences, common interests, or simply enjoying a cup of tea together, these connections foster a sense of home and belonging.

At Brize Meadow Lodge care home in Brize Norton, two residents Brian and Mike, bonded over their shared past as RAF veterans. From their first meeting, they discovered a wealth of stories to exchange and a camaraderie that continues to grow. Their friendship is a testament to the fact that meaningful relationships can be built at any stage of life.

For others, friendships formed in childhood last a lifetime. George Price, a resident at HC-One’s Leighton Court care home in Wallasey, and his lifelong friend George Foukes, have shared 90 incredible years of friendship.

From playing in the streets of Seacombe in the 1930s to growing up, raising families, and now enjoying their later years, their bond has remained unbreakable. Reflecting on their friendship, George Price shared, “We’ve always kept in touch, even when life got busy,” while George Foukes added, “Knowing nice people is key.”

Encouraging friendships with social spaces and activities

In HC-One care homes, we believe that supporting great friendships in our homes starts with understanding each person living with us as an individual. Our programme of activities is then designed around their personal interests, ensuring that every resident has opportunities to engage in ways that feel meaningful to them.

From creative arts sessions to gentle movement classes and relaxed coffee mornings, we offer a variety of ways for residents to connect in a way that suits them best. Mealtimes are also an important social occasion, where residents have the freedom to choose how and where they dine, whether enjoying a quiet meal with a close friend or a lively chat at a shared table. Events in the local community also offer further opportunities to forge and maintain meaningful connections.

We care about what matters most to the people living in our homes, and we empower residents to shape their daily experiences by promoting personal choice, independence, and companionship.

The impact of friendship on wellbeing

Friendships in care homes offer more than just companionship. They also provide emotional support, reduce loneliness, and contribute to overall happiness and well-being. Knowing that there is always a friendly face to share a moment of connection with can make all the difference in feeling valued and understood.

As we celebrate International Friendship Month, we acknowledge the incredible bonds formed within our care home communities. Whether new connections or lifelong friendships, these relationships are at the heart of what makes HC-One a truly special place to live.
