A summer of sport All the benefits of staying active in care homesThis year, the ‘summer of sport’ has captivated the nation – whether it’s the Euros, Wimbledon or the Olympics! It’s clear that sport has the power to unite and inspire people of all ages. But what about the benefits of sport for our older generations?

Here at HC-One, we believe that staying active is essential for a happy and healthy life in our care homes. This blog explains all of the reasons why – beyond just keeping fit!

Physical health

It goes without saying that regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining good physical health, and this is no different for our residents.

Even gentle exercise can help to improve muscle strength, balance, and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls and increasing independence. This could be anything from armchair exercise routines, playing a lawn game outside or even just having a dance and getting some extra steps in!

For this reason, many of our care homes across England, Scotland and Wales benefit from regular sessions offering gentler ways to keep fit – like the exercise club at Needham Court care home in Jarrow!

Mental health and wellbeing

Sport isn’t just good for the body; it’s also fantastic for the mind. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can help to boost mood and reduce stress. It can also improve sleep quality, which is essential for overall wellbeing.

Residents at Defoe Court care home in County Durham receive Certificates of Achievement for the improvements they make in their weekly exercise sessions, which Brian earned after being able to walk independently again. The sense of accomplishment he felt at gaining his independence through his own hard work was the best reward!

Did you know that sport can also improve cognitive function too? Engaging in physical activity can help to stimulate the brain and improve cognitive function. Activities that require focus, coordination, and strategy, such as table tennis or darts, can help to keep the mind sharp.

Social connection

Playing sports has a unique ability to bring people together. Whether it’s cheering on a favourite team or participating in a local sports day, it can create a sense of community and belonging.

Our residents benefit greatly from social interaction, and participating in sports-related activities can provide valuable opportunities to connect with others. It was particularly touching to see family and friends of Alexander care home in Lewisham all get together with residents to host a football match and BBQ.
